Mostly doing laundry and cooking and general cleaning today, while listening to podcasts. So, the theme songs from:

Comedy Death-Ray - CDR Best of 2010 MAIN EDIT2
- by Reggie Watts

Doug Loves Movies - Garfunkle and Oates and Samm Levine guest
- theme performed live by Garfunkel (sic) & Oates

the return of Higson & Whitehouse’s magnificent Down The Line, from 15/3/11 on BBC Radio 4

Marc Maron - WTF - EPISODE 153 PAUL KRASSNER
- both of these are audio collages, more than music

Nerdist - unnumbered episode with Danny Pudi
- a five second chiptune

and reading in bed:

DMZ vs Metalheadz vs Soul II Soul vs Trojan Soundsystem - Roundhouse Soundclash part 5 - Final Round (17-02-2010)

plus some stuff off youtube.

So, basically what I’ve learnt from this week is what I already know, from giving up keeping track of most of the music I listen to on this thing already - it’s fucking hard and takes a lot longer to actually note and write something about the music than it does to listen to it. I listen to something most of my day, and it’s more time-efficient to let my phone remember the 30-120minute things than to stop and think about 3-minute things beyond “listen to that again next month” or “delete that now.” I have hundreds and hundreds of unheard CDs, going back a good eight years or so (that could make a monster post in itself), which can’t be played anywhere other than my bedroom, which keeps getting them short shrift. And even trying to pay half-attention to music heard in shops or pubs or the lobby of work or whatever was a task too far.

I might go back to trying to log some whole albums and such here, though. Taking the above paragraph as a glove slapped spastically in my own face.

And I’m sorry that it was a rare week without gigging or clubbing!

#musicdiaryproject, SATURDAY

almost all incidental music today. Flipping between a classic hits and an indie station in a friend’s car (her doing the flipping). Various clips and live performances on youtube. Some Tenacious D songs in their first episode of their TV show, watching to see what Paul F Tompkins looked like back then. The first disc of Andy Clockwise - Classic FM (bought for $1 two weeks ago) - this got good reviews for its ambition and wide-ranging style five years ago? Ugh. But spent most of the day at the beach, then went out for dinner and drinks, so very little music around.

#musicdiaryproject, FRIEEDAY, FRIEEDAY

reading in bed:

RA.249 Discodeine - 2011.03.07
- more oddball ~exotica~ than disco

#musicdiaryproject, THURSDAY

doc_emily_haines_2010_06_01
- actually, this one cuts out all the songs, but still back announces them.

richardinyourmind_2010_06_27
- this time including bits of their songs. and lots of questioning about the ~role of drugs~ in the ~creative process~

lav_cloudcontrol_2010_11_09
- meant to be a studio session, but badly named and without any ID3 tagging, turns out to be two live tracks and an interview
lav_reginaspektor_2010_04_30
- studio session including soporific Radiohead cover

At work:

Having breakfast and getting a Wurlitzer ready for someone off eBay to come and pick up

brianwilson_2010_10_19
- in which 20-year-old breakfast radio hosts isolate a second of Wilson la-la-ing a Gershwin tune and tailing off, and play it over and over and giggle.
delasoul_2010_11_10
- in which 20-year-old breakfast radio hosts mispronounce his bandmate’s name, and Pos makes a broken promise to do De La Soul Is Dead live in February

On the bus in the morning:

Freaky-Trigger-And-The-Lollards-Of-Pop-Series-4-Week-11
- containing various Braiden, Jaar and Girl Unit tracks in this Tracer & Lex ep of the radio show

At work:

Nancy Vandal tribute album - You’re Not Doing It Properly
- amusingly self-comissioned covers album by defunct 90s comedy-pop-punk band, released as bonus mp3s on the 2009 DVD of their 2003 reunion show. Which I just found out about the other week. Kinda worth it for Laura Imbruglia’s cover of You’re So Tough For Hating Silverchair.
Cadence Weapon – Tron Legacy: The Mixtape
- reminded by yesterday’s bus podcast

And these misc mp3s, among others:

At the gym, on bike and weights:

Steinski - walkin’ and talkin’
- (part of) a three-hour podcast where Steve Stein plays and natters about a wide variety of records broadly described as “people talking over music”

Between rounds of music trivia at the pub:

Wagon Christ - Toomorrow
- I’m guessing this was what the host dude put on when he said he was going to play Luke Vibert - new album, so seems likely

Walking home post-pub:

The Orb - London Belongs To Me
- 2009 mix/doco thingy from RBMA website, with Paterson wandering about London and playing tracks of his own and others that various locations recall to him

A slight change in format this week, as I hitch a ride on Nick Southall’s #musicdiaryproject...

A slight change in format this week, as I hitch a ride on Nick Southall’s #musicdiaryproject bandwagon. Which basically means I’ll try and note some things I listen to at work (though not most of the single tracks, and nothing off youtube. I have actual work to do) and on CD, not just my phone. Also, I haven’t been home all week, so here follow Monday through Wednesday, posted at twenty minutes into Friday:

MONDAY:

On the bus in the morning:

Fbi 94.5’s All the Best: Growing up in the Shite, 1 Degree of Separation, Westside Publications, Cronulla Local.
- not much music here, but some as bridges between stories. Also, that should be Shire.

At the gym, on the treadmill:

The Magician - Magic Tape Five
- several months’ back’s tracklist-free mix from former Aeroplane co-pilot.

At the gym, on weights:

DJ Food - ‘88 was great but ‘89 is mine
- solid live mix (or rehearsal for same) by Strictly Kev of nothing but 1989 hip-hop. About a quarter Native Tongues, and a Hijack track over Apache that I don’t think I’ve ever heard.

At work:

KMD – Nitty Gritty
- in honour of Zev Love X’s tour last week
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings at Newport Folk Festival 2010
- hour-long set from an NPR recording

On the bus home:

latw_lcdsoundsystem_2010_09_6
- A complete mess of a podcast, in this listener’s opinion: offering a 24-minute download of a concert that was broadcast as 45 minutes or an hour or something, you’d expect about 24 minutes of the gig, right? No: you get the two dumbest, most plain-indie-rock songs the band played at the whole show (if they were restricted to only two songs, why not use, say Yeah and New York I Love You? That could have taken 24 minutes alone. Instead, we get an announcer from the radio show back-announcing each song, then introducing that they’ll play the breakfast radio hosts’ interview with James Murphy. Then the breakfast hosts introduce that they’ll be playing pre-recorded interview bits with James Murphy. Then they play one piece of pre-recorded interview with James Murphy. Then they announce that they’ll play another piece of pre-recorded interview with James Murphy shortly, before introducing that piece of … this happens three or four times! Jesus fuck.

lav_mphazes_2010_09_24
- this is, if anything, even worse. In 18 minutes of an excerpt of an interview where the producer and friends perform one original song and one cover, they talk about the song that was played earlier without including it, and leave in about seven minutes of talk about how the microphones aren’t working and one guest can’t be heard, plus five minutes about how the girl singer doesn’t know the names of any teams in some local sporting competition that happened that day, or the next day, or something. This is for a national – potentially international – audience to listen to after the fact; it becomes utterly irrelevant when not actually part of a breakfast radio program.

Okay, so not everyone will be listening six months later, but I stopped filling my phone up at work in August, switching to home instead, so I’ve been doing some catching up. Not even enough to get a good idea of the feel of the show, really.

(Although: is it the same show that the British Invasion live video was from? I bought that on DVD, and it’s a straight dub from someone’s off-air VHS, with a squiggly line rolling up the screen during the opening, from the source leaving it rolled part-on for years, presumably. In a fun way.

Cut Copy – A Tale Of Two Journeys
- “a medley of hits performed live at the Island Diamond Dance Hall in ‘87 by Bobby Boomerang and his band.” Ahem.

SklarBroCountry - SBC 8 MAIN EDIT 3
- Janeane Garofalo likes sports. There’s a great anecdote in here though, about some Reality Bites fangirls getting Eddie Vedder to take a photo of them with Janeane.

Comedy Death Ray - CDR 85 MAIN
- painfully clunky two-hour ep with various characters, and Tom Hanks’ son providing more charm as co-host than any of them. Includes Cake Boss, which it’s definitely looking like idg.

Dam-Funk – Live DJ Set at No Culture, LA 2009 - Light on the keytar and mic-break toppings, but at...

Dam-Funk – Live DJ Set at No Culture, LA 2009
- Light on the keytar and mic-break toppings, but at one point he does big up “this is the UK-only 9-minute 12” version” of Prince’s Sexy Dancer, and claim he’s not going to stop it early, so everyone has a chance to find someone to dance with.

Boogie Down Productions - Operating Room Interview, Part 1
Boogie Down Productions - Operating Room Interview, Part 2
- aw! Historical artefact of KRS AND Scott LaRock on this radio interview, calling out the Juice Crew and boasting of everything they’re going to do together.

NPR – Science Friday - 20101126_totn_01
- slightly-edited live recording of the 2010 Ignobel Awards, for nerdy lols.

MJ Cole – Fader Mix, October 2010
- opens with a Wiley vocal exloose, in which Richard boasts of “giving out them zip files like herpes,” or something.

Panel Borders interview with Dan Clowes & Chris Ware
- A lot of talk about the switch from periodicals to books for both of them, with Clowes still sounding slightly outraged that he was never allowed to vary the size of Eightball issues until Ware blew all format-related hideboundness out of the water with the first ACMEs.

Sway & King Tech - The World Famous Wake Up Show Gang Starr Special 04/12/2003
- aw again, Guru and Premo sound so happy to be working together again, proud of their legacy and their new collab. Shame it all went away, thanks to a scam artist who couldn’t even come up with his own fake name.

Marc Maron - WTF - EPISODE 137 BOBBY LEE
- had never heard of this dude, so much have been drawn in by a blurb about his addiction and recovery cycle – Maron doesn’t chime in with anything of his own history, though, just being a warm sounding board

Kevin Smith & Scott Mosier - SModcast 130: RawStralia
- There may be as many as eight sentences in this hour of talk (about Smith’s mum wanting to fuck Richard Chamberlain in The Thorn Birds, largely) in which Smith doesn’t follow a verb with “and shit,” but he fills the rest of them by appending “and shit like that” to a plural noun.

Marc Maron - WTF_-_EPISODE_134_LIVE_ERIN_FOLEY_ET_AL
- Hey, it’s a live WTF with Eddie Pepitone in. What a surprise.

The Adam Carolla Show – Christy Canyon
- being recorded in front of a live audience keeps the morning zoo-ness to a thankful minimum, and Carolla’s having gone to school with the porn star he’s interviewing makes for a curious balance between a pleasantly informal chat, and weird creepiness as he knows the locations of all her 80s films and complains how she wouldn’t fuck him in high school, even though he took her sister to the prom

The Sound Of Young America – John Waters
- light chat about Waters’ new book.

Optimo - I Love Techno November 2010
- Pure-style bangin’ mix in a festival environment.

Nerdist - Number 37 – Bumbershoot
- live multi-comedian panel, with Doug Benson as Greek chorus and David O’Doherty doing a few songs

fuckityballs: lost a bunch of actual written reaction whatnot in a Word.fail - anyway here’s...

fuckityballs: lost a bunch of actual written reaction whatnot in a Word.fail - anyway here’s some stuff that went in my ears in the first week of February:

Detroit Grand Pubahs - Mr O Dancehall Selection for allez allez
- taking a fairly liberal definition of dancehall, which is reasonable enough for an 80-minute mix

DJ Moneyshot - Deep Covers
- AMAZING mix, done for Solid Steel, of hip-hop cover versions. The only ones I recall recognising were CB4’s Straight Outta Locash, and the Meth verse of the Wu version of Sucker MCs. Deep digging = delightful.

Inkstuds - Brian Chippendale
- brut cartoonist and Lightning Bolt drummer keeps breaking from the conversation to talk about how cute the dogs are in the park where he’s sitting.

Steinski - san francisco set 1.6.7 (smooved)
- really interesting, if lightly disappointing, to hear how un-clunky the cutting and doubling on the early parts of this sounds – so obviously the product of a laptop and prepared segments, in contrast to - not necessarily the actual tape-edit 80s stuff, but the friendly Ruff Mix style of some of Stein’s more recent productions.

Creative Screenwriting Magazine - Eastbound & Down Q&A
- splendid live panel appearance, with Jody Hill and Danny McBride talking the creative process

NPR - 20101204_atc_07
- alleges that they’ll talk through Girl Talk’s process, which assertion falls over after “I put things I like aside for later”

NPR - 20101202_atc_17
- Brief piece tries to explain Bonobo to All Things Considered audience as someone who makes electronic music but …ISN’T a DJ!?!!%!!??*!?!

Jay-Z on Howard Stern 11-15-10
- surprising (to me) how Stern’s lowbrow schtick works at getting a relaxed and open conversation out of a guest who’s all about public image.

Radio New Zealand - Enzology Part 08 - Time and Tide (1981-1982)
- Rot setting in as Tim Finn busts out on his Ricky Fataar-accompanied solo life, misled by early success. Actually the piece doesn’t say any of that, but you know.

FACT Mix 206 - Ikonika (Nov ‘10)
- Dubstep pixie puts together an of-the-moment mix including a bunch of her own stuff and Girl Unit’s IRL.

The Moth - Sam Shepard: You Can Lead a Horse to Water
- A tale about being the one qualified rider on a movie set. You can fairly hear the mustache twitch as he twinkles his way through it.

Paul F. Tompkins - Pod F. Tompkast Episode 4
- The phone piece at the start is the first time I’ve encountered Tompkins’ Cake Boss character. IDGI, I guess?

Andrew Weatherall - London Xpress 02/04/2000
- happily for a set from this time, heads in more organic directions in the second hour than the Swordsmen ticking-machines style of the era.

DJ Shadow - Live In LA 10/31/09
- an actual DJ set, rather than his own stuff. Or at least a mix of the two, Organ Donor’s in there but I can’t tell if he’s doing that cute playing-it-all-on-an-MPC trick he does “live” live.

Comedy Death-Ray - CDR 80 MAIN
- great episode, with Adam Scott proving an ineffectual presence as co-host, but then an hour and a half of Paul F. Tompkins as Ice-T riffing alongside James Adomian as Jesse Ventura.

RA228_101011_Ivan-Smagghe-residentadvisor.net
RA230_101025_Alan-Howarth-residentadvisor.net
RA231_101101_Space-Dimension-Controller-residentadvisor.net
RA235_101129_jozif-residentadvisor.net
RA236_101206_Petar-Dundov-residentadvisor.net
- a whole batch of RA podcasts suited way better to reading in bed than to dancing or working out. The Howarth and Dundov ones are fantastic, but all of them are good.

this “read more” link may be temperamental:

L-Vis 1990 - RA Label of the Month Mix: Night Slugs (November 2010)

Comedy Death-Ray - CDR 82 MAIN EDIT

- a less splendid ep, plugging CDR’s We Are The World cover.

Guardian Music Weekly: Swans

Jesse Thorn - The College Years - Free Form 10/14/04

WTF_-_EPISODE_130_MIKE_DESTEFANO

TSOYA - Live at WNYC: John Hodgman Reads “16 Things To Do I Connecticut Before You Die”

TSOYA - Judd Apatow

SklarBroCountry - SBC 9 MAIN EDIT
- with Jon Hamm, who has things to say about sports.

The Interview Show - Uffie
- surprising (to me) how tolerant I am of this chick’s privileged schtick.

NPR - 20101102_fa_01
- fawning interview with Michael Caine

NPR - 20101104_totn_03
- Charming, relaxed call-in show with R and Th’ Soph Crumbs.

NPR - 20101129_fa_01
- Terri Gross asks Anne Hathaway why she ever agrees to do nudity. Hathaway politely rolleyes in response.

Rinse FM – Ill Blu show from 12/10/10

Marc Maron - WTF_-_EPISODE_131_DOUG_BENSON

Nerdist - Number 35 - Jonathan Coulton
- an hour of Hardwick telling Coulton they’ve met several times before, interspersed with live songs by Coulton.

Chemical Brothers - Digital Decks

The Adam Carolla Show - Judah Friedlander
- a one-on-one, where Friedlander tells Carolla how spot-on he is

The Adam Carolla Show - Stephen Tobolowsky
- a morning-zoo style one, where Tobolowsky gets to speak about 19 words throughout. Horrible.

Nerdist - Number 34 - Bill Maher
- did you know Bill Maher thinks he’s very smart? Not much else to take away from this.

Comedy Death Ray - CDR 84 MAIN with Reggie Watts
- Aukerman plays the usual “Thanks Reggie, shame you can’t stay” gag after the theme song, presumably expecting greater hilarity to ensue when it turns out Watts was actually in the studio.

Danny Krivitz - allez-allez mix
- exactly as early-80s-disco as you expect

more catching-up - from before the 29th of January
Alex Paterson - 6 Mix 24th Oct...

more catching-up - from before the 29th of January

Alex Paterson - 6 Mix 24th Oct 2010
- Two hour radio jobbie for Orb megamind featuring influences on, and about half of, the David Gilmour collab Metallic Spheres. Shame it sounds so tame and dull!

Aeroplane October 2010 Mix
- sounds like Vito’s switching to software over CD-Js for mixing?

DJ Food - “Go For Blue Suite” - recorded for Solid Steel 21.09.07

Jamie XX - Boiler Room BR #35
- live from the club mix, including an incongruously hardcore MC bigging him up over the mic.

Nerdist - Number 33 - Paul F. Tompkins
- amusingly, I was ironing a few weeks’ worth of shirts when Tompkins talked about how he saves up his shirt-ironing to do while listening to a podcast.

The Sound Of Young America - Live at WNYC: Judah Friedlander

Keith And The Girl - 1018: Gay in the Back

Marc Maron - WTF_-_EPISODE_129_JANEANE_GAROFALO
- sounding angry and earnest, rather than funny or confessional. As to be expected, I suppose.

BeatsInSpace-08.10.10 Part1 with Rory Phillips
BeatsInSpace-08.10.10 Part2 with Juan Maclean
- Juan taking the opportunity to pwn a giggling Sweeney before he hits the decks

Comedy Death Ray - CDR 70 Master EDIT
- Musician-packed studio, with Aimee Mann, Ted Leo, and Jon Wurster – strange to have this champ of improve playing straight on CDR!

Comedy Death Ray - CDR 72 MAIN EDIT

Roundhouse Soundclash 02 Selection 17-02-2010

Roundhouse Soundclash 03 Entertainment 17-02-2010
- having had a chance to warm-up, the systems start merking each other on the mic. “You’re not even playing your own dubplates, man!” “Some crews had to bring selectors who ain’t even in the crew!” Terribly fun.

not things I've listened to, things I haven't read

Inspired by my previous post, and it reminding me of this Tom Ewing post, I decided to audit my shelves and get an idea of how many books I have sitting around unread – and how many have actually moved house several times without ever getting completed, or started.

This definitely isn’t even complete: I have several boxes unpacked from moving into this house almost a year ago, and a shipping box or two still under my mother’s house from 1999 or so, any or all of which may contain further untouched gems, just waiting for that week when I’m going to kick back and get really properly caught up.

So, starting with the one that reminded me:

Kid Koala – Nufonia Must Fall

- this one was always waiting for me to especially sit down and start the CD and see if reading the book took the intended exact same duration. The only CD player in the house is a boombox beside my bed, the book is on the top shelf of the only bookcase in my bedroom, and yet another year goes by without me putting in the 45 minutes or so that I’m assuming the author intended.

All of these arrived in the mail JUST TODAY, so I think I can be excused:

Julia Wertz – Drinking At The Movies

Tim Hensley – Wally Gropius

Dash Shaw – Bodyworld

Here’s a stretch that I’ve started at some point or other, but never made it through:

Irvine Welsh – If You Liked School, You’ll Love Work

- short stories IIRC, so built to be read incompletely.

Michael Chabon – A Model World

- This one’s been officially on the bedside table for over a year, and more than one house. Again, short stories though.

Anonymous – Boned

- incredibly poor roman a clef about the Australian commercial TV news business. Almost certain I’ll never finish this, unless I accidentally find it the day I finish whatever my beach book at the moment is (nb: just finished Stewart Home’s Come Before Christ And Murder God last week, which had been waiting about nine years, and am currently on a re-read (first since I was 12) of Fleming’s The Spy Who Loved Me. It’s still great!)

The Essential Lenny Bruce – His Original Unexpurgated Satirical Routines

- again, not designed to be read all at once. (Not designed to be read at all, really, but you know what I mean.) This one has been dipped into in the bath a bunch over the last two years.

Earl Mac Rauch – The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eighth Dimension

- started about five years ago, ran aground early.

The Best Of Smash Hits – The ‘80s

- probably got more than halfway through this, on a combination of dipping in and then trying to work front-to-back through the rest, in the first six months. Happy to take a decade or two before tapping it out completely, though.

Donna Tartt – The Secret History

- Have given this several goes over the last 18 years, always run aground on the snotty entitlement of the leads within 100 (50?) pp.

Harry Harrison – Bill The Galactic Hero

- loved and frequently re-read the Stainless Steel Rat series when I was a kid; only tried this a few years ago, and struggled to near the end before just giving up unfulfilled.

Jah Wobble – Memoirs Of A Geezer

- bought and started this a couple of months ago. Keep stalling on the lack of a ghostwriter – keep feeling like Wobble is gritting his teeth and telling me everything he can manage to remember about his childhood, instead of either spinning a delightful series of fragments, or handing over to someone to put the interesting bits into an ersatz Wobble voice.

Theo Ellsworth – Capacity

- to be fair, a few pages of digging into Ellsworth’s intricate linework with yr eyes easily leaves the reader too overwhelmed to follow a narrative. Or maybe I should try it in the daytime? This has been on the bedside table in progress for six months or so.

Bill Drummond - How To Be An Artist

- have devoured and re-devoured every one of King Boy D’s books before, but somehow got stalled on this half-text, half-photos-of-posters account of one of his art projects when nearly at the end. It’s actually been republished under another title, in paperback, in the years since.

Ego Trip’s Big Book Of Racism

- designed for casual flipping, so I’m letting myself off on that one. But also, it’s no Ego Trip’s Book Of Rap Lists, one of the top ten books about music ever. Partly the writing’s just not as good, partly the lols just aren’t there, and in huge part, it’s written to a very specific American audience, and within that to a US audience, and within that even more directly to an urban (ie living in cities, not euphemising skin tone) readership. I’m probably not even getting 2/3s of the references – fuck American TV and sports people, right?

Tony Millionaire – Billy Hazelnuts And The Crazy Bird

- Birthday present from last year – waiting to be in the mood to just watch Millionaire characters give each other chase for 20 minutes, which is what the first chapter seemed to be setting up.

John Stanley – Thirteen Going On Eighteen

- fantastic 60s teen girl comics; probably read ¼ of them. I’m slightly sad that I haven’t given myself more to enjoy, but on the other hand I can eke it out and give myself the rest of my life to keep reading new ones.

Tove Jansson – Moomin: The Complete Comic Strip vol 4

- I think this got stalled one or two continuities from the end because of a move. The stalling is certainly what has stopped me from taking the shrinkwrap off of odd-book-out from this part of the list:

Tove Jansson & Lars Jansson – Moomin: The Complete Comic Strip vol 5

Dedini – An Orgy Of Playboy’s Eldon Dedini

- this one I’ve actually read the entire book of, and picked up again several times to flip through, and enjoy a random selection of horny satyrs, foolish rich dudes, pillowy nymphs and charmingly calculating good-time girls. But I haven’t watched the DVD documentary that comes tucked in the back.

Debbie Dreschler - The Summer Of Love

- this one’s currently being read, a chapter every week or two. The alarming colouring, and deliberate-or-not? off-register aspect thereof, helps the serialised experience.

B. Krigstein Comics

- actually, I can’t remember whether I started this or not. I definitely got fatigued after buying both this huge hardcover, and the huge hardcover “Vol. 1” biography, at the same time and reading the latter in full.

E.C. Segar – Popeye vol 4: Plunder Island

- it’s a relief that vol 5 of this is so late, given my tardiness. (I’ve read the Sundays in full, and lost track of where I was up to in the dailies, so started again with a bookmark. Another one that got thrown off because of moving.

Bill Drummond & Mark Manning – The Wild Highway

- okay, one more unfinished Drummond, but it’s not his fault. The first Bad Wisdom book struck a totally workable balance between Drummond’s real-life diaries and Mindwarp’s twisted rock fantasy versions of the events; this one just makes you sit through five pages of Z fucking beautiful newsreaders ‘til jizz explodes out of their ears for three paras of Bill wondering how much batteries cost here in Africa and if he’s getting ripped off as a tourist.

Danny Sugarman – Wonderland Avenue

- I don’t like The Doors, but I do like rock stories. Turns out I don’t like gross, entitled teenagers who think their own awesomeness outshines the worth of providing a cultural account of the scene his management charges operated in.

Hellboy: Odd Jobs – ed. Christopher Golden, probably

- I bought a remaindered copy of this for one story - maybe Steve Bissette? – anyway, general curiosity, whoever the contributor list is; but haven’t made it past whichever single story I gave a burl.

Matthew Collin – Altered State: The Story of Ecstasy Culture & Acid House

- have read a few chapters here and there about subjects I already know bits about from other sources. Tiny print makes it a prick to read at length.

Kurtzman, Elder, Jaffee, Roth & Davis – Humbug

- this two-hardcovers-in-a-slipcase complete reprinting of 11 1960s magazines is in no way designed to be read in full. I’m about halfway through the second volume, 18 months or so after starting? Not bad, I reckon.

Jonathan Lethem – The Fortress Of Solitude

- have had a good three goes at starting this one. And I like it every time! I guess I just never try it when I’ve got enough time to hold hundreds of characters and their interrelations in my head for a week or five.

Jonathan Carroll – White Apples

- This one I keep starting just to see if I’ve actually started it before or not, and realising that not.

Dave Eggers – A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius

- had a few cracks at this over five years or more – am pretty sure now that even if I do get to the end sometime, I’m never going to even start:

Dave Eggers – You Shall Know Our Velocity

A big wodge of ones I’ve sort-of read, but not really in this form:

Aline Kominsky-Crumb – Love That Bunch

- I’ll have read a fair few of the stories in this collection before I bought it five or six years ago. And since then, I’ve bought her combination text autobio / photo collection / colourised anthology Need More Love, and taken two years to get through that. But I did finish it, just last month!

David Heatley – My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down

- No idea if there’s anything at all in this hardcover that hasn’t been in Kramer’s Ergot, Mome, or the two issues of Deadpan. But I bought it cheap in December, and will find out eventually. I’ll even read the black-bars version of My Sexual History.

Peter Carey – True History Of The Kelly Gang

- got this when it came out, but never started it, possibly due to having never finished the one before. I did, at some point in between, though, copy a serialised radio reading of the book and listen to it while going to sleep over several weeks.

Charles Vess – The Book Of Ballads

- I bought, I think, four issues of the self-published Green Man Press series, and read some shorts in …Negative Burn? No idea what’s actually in this Tor collection, but I’m guessing most of it’s not new to me.

Mark Beyer – Amy & Jordan

- have had the Pantheon hardcover for years without reading a single strip, but I did previously have the Maroverlag edition, which I believe is completely reprinted in this one.

The Life & Times Of R. Crumb – edited by Monte Beauchamp

- IIRC I read an issue of Blab that this was expanded from, over several stints of standing in the “undergrounds” corner of much-missed Sydney comic shop The Land Beyond Beyond. Not sure whether I’ve ever cracked the cover of this, or whether I’ve read all but two pages.

Jack Cole & Plastic Man – Forms Stretched To Their Limits – Art Spiegelman & Chip Kidd

- I went to the uni library to read the (late 90s?) New Yorker essay that Spiegelman’s text for this was taken from. And I may have read a bunch of the stories reprinted in this edition at the following bloke’s house:

Eddie Campbell – The Black Diamond Detective Agency

- I’d read this, in two instalments, on the original pages. That was enough to not bother buying the book until a sale.

Eddie Campbell – The Amazing Remarkable Monsieur Leotard

- conversely, this one was great, but having read it on the original pages, I haven’t been able to get through the shrinky-dink, dotty repro of First Second’s printing.

Eddie Campbell – Alec: The Years Have Pants

- I may or may not have read every single page in this before – I even appear on at least three of them – but I certainly haven’t cracked the shrinkwrap and spread the $80 hardcover out on my lap.

Dash Shaw – The Unclothed Man In The 35th Century AD

- this shipped sealed in a plastic bag (but not shrinkwrap), so I just bought it going “Ooh! A new book by the dude who did the amaaaaazing Bottomless Bellybutton [which took me about a year to get past page 20, btw: rrrraced through it once I was over the hump], gimme,” and only later found out it was a collection of storyboards for a cartoon I haven’t seen, padded out with a bunch of short stories I own in anthologies.

And the long, long tail of purchases that remain resolutely uncracked. I managed to cut down my CD buying a few years ago, when I realised I had hundreds of albums completely unplayed, and no idea of when I was going to get to them – and I listen to music almost all the time – but have never felt like book purchasing was a similar problem. Um:

Guy DeLisle – Pyongyang: A Journey In North Korea

Joann Sfar – Klezmer (Book One: Tales Of The Wild East)

Monty Python: The Case Against - edited by Robert Hewison

Da Capo Best Music Writing 2002 – edited by Jonathan Lethem

Joe Sacco – The Fixer: A Story From Sarajevo

Neil Gaiman & Dave McKean – Mirrormask (childrens?)

- I think this is the children’s book version of the multiple Mirrormask books. I dunno, it was remaindered and I haven’t taken it out of the shop’s plastic bag. Okay, I didn’t remember this even existed, let alone that I’d bought it.

Complete Peanuts 1967-1968

Complete Peanuts 1969-1970

- I’ve got another one of these four-year box-sets unopened somewhere, but I can’t remember if it’s 64-66 or 71-74. The former, I think, which would mean that I got stalled on the 1962-1963 volume due to a move in 2007. It is going to be a cunt to catch up once I actually find all of them, let alone buy whichever I’ve missed in the three Christmasses since then.

Barry Humphries – Handling Edna

- Birthday present from…2009?

Iain Banks – The Crow Road

- This one’s been moving around since 2001, never even getting shelved, because I’m so convinced I’ll just sit down and plow into it one day.

David B. – Epileptic

Michael Marshall – Blood Of Angels

- This one’s definitely never getting read. 1 ½ good Michael Marshall Smith books carried me through two less good MMS books, one gross Michael Marshall book, and then I think I abandoned the second ten pages in. God knows why I bought this third.

Ian Grey – Sex, Stupidity & Greed: Inside The American Movie Industry

J. Robert Lennon – The Funnies

Stewart Home – Cunt

Smoking In Bed – Conversations With Bruce Robinson (edited by Alastair Owen)

Bruce Robinson – The Peculiar Memories Of Thomas Penman

- got both of these at the same time, a good ten years ago.

Jonathan Lethem – Gun, With Occasional Music

B. S. Johnson – Christie Malry’s Own Double Entry

Harry Thompson – This Thing Of Darkness

- Sole novel written by Herge biographer before early cancer death. Looks like the kind of thing I wouldn’t like at all, but I liked the Herge so well that I want to try.

Bruce Beresford – Josh Hartnett definitely wants to do this…

- actually meant to read this as soon as I bought it last year! Meant to be amusing outsider-in-Hollywood anecdotage.

Nicholas Hope – Brushing The Tip Of Fame

- I imagine this is like the above, but much less so.

The Ganzfeld 5 – Japanada! - edited by Dan Nadel

The Future Dictionary Of America (McSweeneys anthology)

I. – Stephen Dixon

Jonathan Lethem – This Shape We’re In

Mark Z. Danielewski – House Of Leaves

- This one’s also been moving with me for over ten years. I might pull the plug.

Frank Thorne – The Crystal Ballroom

Mary Fleener – Life Of The Party

Roberta Gregory – Bitchy’s College Daze

Theodore Nicholas Jouflas – Scary!

Ruben Bolling – Thrilling Tom The Dancing Bug Stories

Samuel R Delany & Howard V Chaykin – Empire

Arnold Roth – Free Lance

Alan Cumming – Tommy’s Tale

Michael Warby – Ellis Unpulped

Kinky Friedman – More Kinky Friedman

Jonathan Franzen – Strong Motion

Lynne Truss – Eats, Shoots & Leaves

Liza Cody – Gimme More

Henry Rollins – Body Bag

  - really early 80s all-caps anger poetry. Strongly expect I’m more likely to ebay this than ever read 10pp of it. Ten years untouched.

Simon Callow – Shooting The Actor

Shawn Levy – Ratpack Confidential

The Troops For Truddi Chase – When Rabbit Howls

Geoff Ryman – The Warrior Who Carried Life

Richard Price – Lush Life

- Bought three Prices in one go last year; loooved the other two, and am just rationing myself.

George P. Pelecanos – King Suckerman

George Pelecanos – The Night Gardener

- Bought about five Pelcanos the year before, and am liking them all too. No rush.

Jonathan Margolis – Cleese Encounters

- got this for free off the classifieds at work, thinking it’d be a good beach read. Small type (obviously a hardcover that hasn’t been reset for the MMPB, just reduced) has made me feel guilty about claiming it from someone else who might ever get to it.

Evelyn Waugh – The Sword Of Honour Trilogy

- this is a hardcover in plastic? Must have been a gift at some point. Love satirical Waugh but know nothing about this, and am kind of scared to try.

Emma Bull – Finder

David Simon & Ed Burns – The Corner

- bought this and Simon’s Homicide at the same time, and am allowing a refractory year between them

Richard Ellman – Oscar Wilde

- have a feeling this was a graduation present, so has been waiting over a decade.

Quentin Crisp – Resident Alien

Peter Shapiro – Turn The Beat Around

Kathy Acker – Pussy, King Of The Pirates

- One day, I’ll read this, and then the last second-hand record shop in the world will no longer exist to sell me the Mekons CD.

Vikram Seth – A Suitable Boy

Tyler Cowen – Create Your Own Economy

The Very Breast Of Russ Meyer – edited by Paul A. Woods

Mome volume 19 – edited by Eric Reynolds

Mome volume 20 – edited by Eric Reynolds

- am waiting on both of these as Kinokuniya never got in #18 until the Graphic festival, where I didn’t want to carry a book around for seven hours afterwards. I’d buy directly from Fanta, but they have managed to fuck up and mis-ship every order I’ve made since 2007, and I’m trying to get those resolved first.

Jonathan Coe – The Closed Circle

- didn’t realise this was a sequel til I read the back on the bus. Oops.

Tony Wilson – 24 Hour Hour Party People – What The Sleeve Notes Never Tell You

Michael Sellers – P.S. I Love You

William Hope Hodgson – The House On The Borderland

Henry Rollins – Fanatic! Vol 3

- I have gotten all the way through the other two bookfuls of him writing keen blurbs about the records he plays on his radio show, though.

Henry Rollins – A Mad Dash

- travelogues are the Rollins books I like best, though.

The Art Of Tony Millionaire

- Birthday present last year. I’m not feeling at all bad about this one yet.

Jim Woodring – Weathercraft

The Idler vol 38 – The Green Man

- Bought this one just for the Alan Moore essay. If I get around to reading that, I’ll count it as done.

Jason Lutes - Berlin vol 2 – City Of Stones

- finally read Vol 1 last year. Figure I’ve got a decade before the third is finished, so might as well space them out.

Your Vigor For Life Appals Me – Robert Crumb Letters 1958-1977

Greg Rucka – Shooting At Midnight

- forgot I’d ever bought this until doing this list – I did enjoy the first few Atticus Kodiak books as they came out, but he’d become a superhuman, unimpeachably moral, lesbian-converting cartoon by the third one IIRC.

Poppy Z Brite – Self-Made Man

David Baddiel – Whatever Love Means

- Pretty sure I am never going to get around to 90s comedian and soccer commentator doing a srs novel about having a baby, or whatever.

Paul McCauley – White Devils

Nicholas Blincoe – Manchester Slingback

- actually does Blincoe have another novel? I might have read this if not.

Ricky Tomlinson – Ricky

- If this had been called Autobiography? My Arse, I bet I’ve had read it by now.

Humphrey Carpenter – Dennis Potter

David Peace – GB84

George Takei – To The Stars

- IIRC I bought this seven years ago simply to ebay the hardcover to a grateful Trek fan. Wish I’d remembered that when he came out and was actually in the news.

Iain Banks – Dead Air

Marc Almond – In Search Of The Pleasure Palace

Cynthia Lennon – A Twist Of Lennon

Carl Wilson – Let’s Talk About Love

- I’ve stopped fooling myself, I just don’t know where to flog ‘em

Five later MASH paperbacks

Dozens of sci-fi paperbacks, 2nd hand and from dead Dad

etc, etc, etc…

Two weeks of no weekends, and often 12-hour days at work, and then a malwared-up laptop, stopped me...

Two weeks of no weekends, and often 12-hour days at work, and then a malwared-up laptop, stopped me from noting much of anything as I went. So, starting to catch up from now on:

listening up to the 23rd of January:

Roundhouse Soundclash 01 Warmup 17-02-2010
- opening rounds of a 7-hour or so clash between the Trojan Soundsystem, Soul II Soul, Metalheads and DMZ. Maybe one I’m forgetting? Hosted by Don Letts.

Comedy Death Ray - 63 Jon Hamm, Rich Sommer, David Koechner
Comedy Death Ray - 64 James Adomian, Sarah Silverman, Mary Lynn Rajskub
- roommate stories from the latter two, two characters from the former.
Comedy Death Ray - 66.1 Bob Odenkirk
Comedy Death Ray - 66.2 Bob Odenkirk, Brett Gelman
- blowing out to 2+ hours after a straight conversation with Odenkirk about work in general, especially Breaking Bad, when Gelman as the perverted short-story reader from the 2009 Best-Of breaks his band from the studio.
Comedy Death Ray - CDR 76.1 MAIN
Comedy Death Ray - CDR 76.2 MAIN EDIT
- this last one is splendid, two full hours or so of Zach Galifinakis with Paul F. Tompkins’ Sir Dame Andrew Lloyd Webber in the studio. Unfortunately, the new naming convention and complete lack of metadata means I’ll likely never rememember who appears on any given episode.

Kevin Huizenga, Jim Rugg and Frank Santoro at PIX 2010

- panel discussion, often about balancing commercial work with personal cartooning.

RA.EX009 Future Classic - 2010.11.26
- incredibly awkward, clumsily amateurish podcast. Has a good several minutes of “umming” and “should we start”ing and “er, do you want to introduce us?”ing at the outset, and would have flowed a lot better if they actually used music from the label as a bed throughout.

XLR8R Podcast: James Holden - June 17, 2010

Doug Benson guest hosting the Adam Carolla Show
- for a far more genial experience than usual. Includes Garfunkel & Oates doing a new song about handjobs, which wins points from this listener.

Jesse Thorn The College years - It’s All Politics!
- featuring phoners with Art Spiegelman and Patton Oswalt. Spiegelman is spruiking the terrible Shadow Of No Towers, and has nothing interesting or fresh to say about it or its inspiration.

WTF_-_EPISODE_125_CHARLES_FLEISCHER_ET_AL
WTF_-_EPISODE_126_AD_MILES

WTF_-_EPISODE_127_AZIZ_ANSARI
- his strategy for encores is to tell new stories about his cousin Harris, because people love Harris. RAAR RAAR RAAR!

Pod F.Tompkast Episode 3

- Variety show recorded bit is good, but the character pieces are always going to have trouble living up to Andrew Lloyd Webber talking to Ice-T from the first one, and handing to Garry Marshall in this one might demand a greater familiarity with the personality of said director than, let’s say, anyone in the world has.

Nerdist Number 36 - Donald Glover

- Including enthusiastic chatter about the Donald For Spider-Man twitmeme, including that Sony asked him to cut it out (!)

Inkstuds Radio - Dave Cooper
- Cooper actually in the studio for this, which always makes an Inkstuds flow better

Savage Love Podcast 213
Savage Love Podcast 214

On the 20th of January:

Skream presents – The Freeizm album
- I don’t feel ripped off on the price.

Nas & Damian Marley BBC 1xtra live
- in five tracks, they drop at least two non-collab hits. As We Enter is so great, did the rest of the album really fall that far short?

Up to the 19th of January:

6 Mix [2010-12-12] – The Art of the Remix
- failed opportunity here, basically playing Some Songs That Are Remixes while constantly promising insight or hands-on secrets from the remixers, then playing a 10-second soundbite and another song you’ve heard 100,000 times.

Comedy Death Ray - 5.21.10 CDR 54
- Uncharacteristic feel to this one – not only does Marc Maron guest, someone who doesn’t - AFAIK! – have much or any of an improv background, but the “character” guests are a fake band who invade the studio and Airheads it out with a bunch of prepared bits, requiring Aukerman and Maron to really play along. Still works, though. And speaking of…

Marc Maron - WTF_-_EPISODE_124_PAUL_SCHEER

- This one was pretty astounding for the turn it takes. Half an hour of really casual standard “so then I did this pilot here, earlier I did improv there,” then Maron goes “…well, I guess yr a guy who doesn’t really have any demons,” almost like he doesn’t know what to say to someone who isn’t tearing themself open, and is just about to wrap up/give up. But Scheer goes “are you fucking kidding?” and busts out half an hour of dad vs stepdad drama and beating a kid bloody at 10 cos that’s how he’d learnt to fight at home, &c &c.

FACT Mix 197 - Margaret Dygas (Oct ‘10)

TSOYA - Dave Tompkins on the Vocoder
-in a slight disappointment, Tompkins does not construct spoken sentences with the same sesquipedalian alacrity that he does his writing.

TSOYA - Chris Morris
- weird hearing Morris be in such a regular “guest” mode, having to slightly explain who he is and what he does, and sell Four Lions, and banter with a host.

Nerdist - Number 32 - Felicia Day
- basically an hour of Hollywood types talking about how SDCC is great, without ever having known it used to actually be a comic convention.

NPR - 20101208_atc_19
- Billy Bragg spruiking the Cage Against The Machine gag to a dude who literally does not know that pop charts are made up of single sales, and thinks that “The Christmas #1” is a voting poll.

XLR8R Podcast: Pilooski - July 6, 2010
- leaning more towards the Discodeine dub-disco style than his earlier re-edit mode

Enzology Part 07 - Waiata (1980-1981)
- including great anecdotage about Nil Fun sputting chups at a hotel that wouldn’t let him open a window.

SklarBroCountry - SBC 16 MAIN EDIT
- Patton Oswalt guesting here, amidst some genial self-congratulation and sports talk. I guess this is a semi-comedy, semi-sports show? Downloaded three to check out, but might be leaving it there.
Savage Love 212

Underworld - Live @ Ultra Music Festival 2008 Florida
- Born Slippy gets worked in fairly early on here, rather than being flogged as the obvious encore. Like they did in Sydney last year.

WFMU’s Best Show Gems with Tom Scharpling from 6/14/2010

up to the 14th Jan:

Lynda Barry - Veronica Rueckert, Friday 10am
- Barry in characteristic art-evangelism mode, enhanced by taking calls from listeners and getting to motivational-speaker them up

Nerdist - Number 31: Fred Willard
- two hour live session, with Willard just sounding happy to be talking to people, regardless of who they are

Savage Love 211a

FACT Mix 194 - Veronica Vasicka (Oct ‘10)
- artsy minimal

Kid Koala - BTTB (X-373) - 29/07/2003
- live-in-the-club recording, including cheers and mic talk from the Kid, on the Nufonia Must Fall promo tour. Which, I guess from the date on this, I must have had for seven years now without either listening to or reading (you’re meant to do both together, incidentally). Which reminds me…

Moon Wiring Club – A Spare Tabby At The Cat’s Wedding
- Gorgeous, filigreed post-trip-hop...

Moon Wiring Club – A Spare Tabby At The Cat’s Wedding

- Gorgeous, filigreed post-trip-hop compiled – apparently! – completely from samples of 60s-70s UK kids TV and the like.

Comedy Death Ray - CDR 53 podcast

- With Weird Al and Garfunkel & Oates in the studio , including G&O busting a live Al cover and including swears in it. He doesn’t quite bristle with outrage.

DJ Food - Sunday at Bundy’s Side A.
DJ Food - Sunday at Bundy’s Side B.

- Revived through the magic of Soundcloud, a cassette-only release of various live snippets from ’95-’96, the PC & Kev-era Food throwing down in clubs, jamming with Squarepusher and DJ Krush, getting “wacky” but unhilarious at this distance answerphone messages from Vadim, etc. NB: the second side is lower tempos than the first.

Coffee Break For Heroes & Villains with Noah | WFMU - Kev from 10/28/2010

- Strictly Kev again fifteen years later, here sitting in on a hip-hop radio show and playing the electro that got him into the genre, a set of obscure covers of rap and dance classics, and the like. Almost three hours!

NPR - 20101209_totn_03

- Neil Gaiman gets to use some of his reliable interview anecdotes while spruiking the latest Abel/Madden “Best American” compilation – I would have like to hear a lot more about the actual material selected and the editing process, rather than classic material.

XLR8R Podcast: Trentemøller - May 6, 2010

- FANTASTIC mixtape of spooky shit, old dark guitar stuff and creepy techno, made to accompany the full goth flowering of his own new album.

The Knife – Hannah med H

- 2003 film soundtrack - less driving than their “own” work, still song-based but focussed more on playing in a specific range of tones.

Pod F. Tompkast Episode 2

- John C Reilly supplants Ice-T in the one-man two-hander scripted phone conversation skit. A decent live bit from years ago with the janitor from Scrubs – how many tapes is he digging through to find material for a 2010 free download?

The Rolling Stones – Rocks Off!

- This one’s supposed to be a bootleg from a 1972-ish Perth concert – probably the same tour the ABC has that weak b&w footage of them playing at a racecourse in Sydney, five miles from the crowd? If they were working in similar circumstances over there, it’s amazing that this obvious desk tape shows them still locked in so well together, not dispirited and barely bothering.

Music Weekly: Bryan Ferry and Ariel Pink

- Or the “people who love themselves but express it differently” special.

KCRW Guest Dj Project - Tamra Davis

- Gary Groth almost inaudible on the phone here, just like his twooter.

BeatsInSpace-07.13.10 Part1 with Joakim
BeatsInSpace-07.13.10 Part2 with Tim Sweeney

- It always takes me by surprise that the J in Joakim is sounded.

- Interview with Chuck D, caught up with after seeing the alleged Fear Of A Black Planet show last week.

THEFADERmix_KIMANNFOXMAN

- Fairly pop-heavy mix from the Hercules frontwoman. Not unlike her set warming up for Roisin at Circus in London the other month, he sighed with a jet-setting world-weariness.

WTF_-_EPISODE_122_JESSI_KLEIN

- Apparently an ex Comedy Central exec and now stand-up. Seems to be on because Maron wants to bone her. I say “seems,” but he does say as much.

FACT Mix 182 - Four Tet (Sep ‘10)

- Sounds like flowers.

Guardian Music Weekly: Nicki Minaj album review

- They do their very very best to be keen on it, but admit near the end that they rly only like three tracks.

- Unnumbered, so accidentally listened to out of order.

NPR - 20101209_fa_01

- Fresh Air interview with the dude who wrote The Big Payback. Basically just Gross saying “There’s a story in your book about [x]. Tell us it!”

Savage Love 208
Savage Love 209
Savage Love 210

- Savage is getting pretty good at being disrespectfully dismissive of callers, especially in the last one, where he actively refuses to answer some calls after playing them, instead talking to the Sex At Dawn dude about bonobos and plunger dicks.

RA.225 Scott Grooves I/II - 2010.09.20 RA.225 Scott Grooves II/II - 2010.09.20
